What it means
The question of whether an artificial system could have interests or experiences that deserve moral consideration. It is distinct from intelligence, legal personhood and whether users form attachments. Fluent claims about feelings do not independently establish that feelings are present.
The strongest case
If artificial systems could experience suffering, ignoring that possibility might create serious harm. Research can clarify which evidence would matter rather than relying on either anthropomorphism or dismissal by definition.
The difficult part
There is no universally accepted test of machine consciousness. Philosophical theories imply different criteria, and precaution has costs too. Treating a product’s emotional performance as evidence can also help a vendor manipulate users.
